The demersal ban on at the moment has kept things quiet again this month, but the wind keeps blowing so not much point going out anyway. I am preparing my cray pots, ready to put them in next week. We are not expecting a “run of the whites” this year and early indications are that there will be a lot of bigger crays around when their soft shells have started to harden.

Shark Bay Spearfishing trip

Hi Laurie,

Just a brief rundown of the weekend we took the Murchison Boat Hire 6.5m up to Shark Bay. Seeing that the wind and swell was down on the Saturday. Matt, Flynny, Clint and myself left Dunsborough on the Friday morning for a very quick trip up to Shark Bay.

All four of us are keen spear fisherman and already knew the spots we wanted to get to. We did pretty well enough on the first day getting plenty of coral trout on the boat and a few others mixed in as well.

It was however unusually quiet for spanish mackerel and tuskfish which are normally a given on most of the spots we frequent and we really had to work to find fish this time.

We camped at the bottom of Whithnell’s Point beach and woke up to a glassed out bay. We made the most of that morning bagging a few more fish before the winds picked up in the afternoon when it was time to head back to the Old Denham Pub.

So in 4 days we managed to go from Dunsborough to Shark Bay to Turtle Bay, camp on the island and come all the way back! I think everyone was pretty buggered for work on Tuesday to say the least!

Cheers  Hugh

The demersal ban kept most boats ashore but the river and beach fished well.

Austin landed a 1.02kg bream and Beau got one at 1.16kgs

Franks big tailor went 4.35

and James shows one of his 3 bream.

All bream are kept alive and returned to the river!
